Shakina Reinhertz began training in the practice of whirling in January of 1982 under Jelaluddin Loras, the son of Suleyman Dede who brought this work to the Western world. In 1993 she was initiated as a Shaikha of the Mevlevi Order of America, and began teaching the way of Rumi in 1996. She began research on this book in 1994 and traveled to Turkey in October of 1997 where she participated in the ceremonies of Sema and Zikr at Rumi’s tomb in Konya. Shakina travels extensively in her teaching work. She lives in the Bay area in California.
