C. Pierce Salguero graduated from the University of Virginia in 1996 as an anthropologist with a focus on Asia, and traveled to this part of the world shortly
afterward. He soon fell in love with Thailand’s unique culture and rich history, and what started as a short trip turned into a lengthy stay. Salguero lived and studied
in Thailand from 1997 to 2001, researching Thai medical traditions and exploring an interest in Buddhism through extended stays at Thai meditation centers and monasteries. During
this time he received training as a practitioner of massage and herbal medicine in Chiang Mai, Thailand, and apprenticed with individual folk healers. After returning to the U.S.
he continued his formal studies at the University of Virginia and received an M.A. in East Asian Studies. His master’s thesis was the basis for this book.
Pierce is currently the director of Tao Mountain Association of Traditional Thai Massage and Herbal Medicine, an educational resource for teachers, students, practitioners,
and academic students of Thai healing methods. Tao Mountain’s mission is to research, preserve, and educate about traditional Thai medicine as a serious traditional medical
discipline. He is the author of A Thai Herbal: Traditional Recipes for Health and Harmony (2003), The Encyclopedia of Thai Massage ( 2004), The Spiritual
Healing of Traditional Thailand (2005), and The Encyclopedia of Thai Massage Student Workbook (2007). Additional information: www.taomountain.org; www.jivaka.net; and www.shivago.org |
